WORLD and Olympic gold medallists Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce headline the nominees for the 2015 Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA)/Scotiabank Golden Cleats male and female Athlete of the Year Awards. The two athletes headline a list of three male and four female nominees for the prestigious awards scheduled to take place at the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) on Saturday at 6:30 pm.
The sixth staging of the ceremony will also see the introduction of the Performance of the Year award which will be the only new category.
The announcement was made by Honorary General Secretary of JAAA, Garth Gayle, filling the gap for chairman of the selection committee, Bernie Panton, who was absent from the special press briefing hosted by Scotiabank at the ScotiaCentre yesterday.
The other male nominees are 110m hurdles silver medallist Hansle Parchment and shot put bronze medallist O’Dayne Richards, who won the award last year. Kaliese Spencer, who won the awards on the women’s side last year, was not included on the list which will see 100m hurdle gold medallist Danielle Williams, 200m silver medallist Elaine Thompson and 400m bronze and 4x400m relay gold medallist Shericka Jackson going up against  Fraser-Pryce.
The Coach of the Year award list comprises Glen Mills of Racers Track Club, Stephen Francis of MVP and hurdles coach Lennox Graham.
The Golden Cleats Awards are aimed at identifying and honouring athletic professionals at the top of their game, while the introduction of the Performance of the Year award will focus on one standout performance.
The nominees for the award are based on their exploits at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China. They are the 4X400m relay women’s gold medal performance; 100m gold medallist Usain Bolt; 100m hurdles gold medallist Danielle Williams; 200m silver medallist Elaine Thompson; 110m hurdles silver medallist Hansel Parchment and Rusheen McDonald’s national record performance in the preliminary round of the men’s 400m.
However, a number of performances have been left off the list including O’Dayne Richards’ 21.69m heave for bronze in the shot put which equalled the national record and was Jamaica’s first medal at the championships.
Dr Warren Blake, president of the JAAA, when quizzed about the criteria of the selection process, acknowledged that some creditable performances were left off.

Meanwhile, three females and seven males make up the youth athletes list for the Howard Aris Award and the Howard Aris/Scotiabank Scholarships.
The female nominees are Ayesha Champagnie of St Andrew Technical (STATHS); Junelle Bromfield of St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Shanice Love of Excelsior.
On the male side are Demar Gayle (Edwin Allen); Marvin Williams (STETHS); Jevaughn James (STETHS); Christopher Taylor (Calabar); Clayton Brown (Jamaica College); O’Brian Waysome (Jamaica College) and Kevin Nedrick (Petersfield).
